Puente del Águila and the Nerja Caves

Puente del Águila – an urbanization located 4km east from the centre of Nerja is located very close to the Nerja Caves.

Urbanization Puente del Águila (the Eagle Bridge) took its name from XIX century aqueduct of the same name.

The aqueduct was used to transport water to the nearby factory of San Joaquin. You can still see the monumental construction on the way from Nerja to Maro.

Urbanization Puente del Águila grew to be a cozy residential area where you can find mostly family homes, with gardens and pools.

There are also quite many luxury villas with all the commodities build on spacious plots.

Puente de Águila is a place for those who seek a very private place to live, as many of the houses are surrounded by fences and trees.

From Puente del Águila is very close to Maro, a small, traditional Andalusian town with its crystal clear water beaches, but even closer to the Nerja Caves!

Caves of Nerja – an outstanding attraction

Caves of Nerja, discovered accidentally in 1959 by a group of boys are one of the biggest tourists attraction on Costa del Sol, if not the whole Spain.

Part of them is open for public and until recently various concerts was taking place there.

What makes these caves special, is that many signs of human activity were found there.

Several expeditions revealed human and animal remains, tools and wall paintings. Character of the discoveries and skeletons prove that the caves were inhabited from around 25000 years ago.

In 2012 a new discovery took place – wall paintings could be the oldest work of art in the history. They are dated to be around 42000 years old and most probably done by Neanderthals.

Around the Caves of Nerja and Puente de Águila

After you finished your visit in the Nerja Caves, you can go to one of the nearby restaurants. One right next to the entrance offers traditional meals that you can enjoy on the terrace with sea views.

You can also talk a walk around the botanical garden, which presents trees and plants typical for the region.

If you feel adventurous – a beautiful hiking path starts right next to the parking of the Caves.

The path leads through pine forests and hills and then divides into 2 ways. One of them goes to El Pinarillo and the other will take you to el Cielo – the highest peak around.
